Unfortunately the photograph of a Nightjar will have to wait for another year. In late May/early June we normally see 2 or 3 male Nightjars and if we’re lucky a female. In mid-July they seem to be everywhere swooping and hovering over the heath and the various small roads and tracks. Wonderful views however trying to take a half decent photo of them in near darkness is a bit tricky.

Female Glow-worm at Hartland Moor

On the way back with the light fading fast we called in at Hartland Moor. With thanks to Robin Scagell’s ongoing Glow-worm survey we were aware the area around the old tramtrack had a good historical record for Glow-worms. After the Fireflies seen earlier in the summer this was too good an opportunity to miss. We jumped out of the car and slowly walked up along the side of the track. Suddenly a tiny green light appeared glowing from the top of the Bell Heather.

Female Glow-worm.
