Herb Paris or The True Lover’s Knot.<\/p>\n

Following a morning wandering amongst the slopes of Arnside Knott a few highlights from a far too brief visit to Gait Barrows with the Herb Paris close to the entrance being the star of the show. Unfortunately rare\u00a0 in North-West England but what a superb plant. Later in the year the flower is followed by a highly toxic berry.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Paris quadrifolia <\/i>with reference to the four leaves originating from the same point on the stem. Closely related\u00a0to the equally choice North American Trilliums occasionally seen in woodland gardens.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

A good display of Bluebells.<\/p>\n

Always a favourite but can be tricky to photograph. I tried using a shallow depth of field in this one so the background would take on a more blurrred, dream-like effect. Hmmm………. technique is fine but I should have chosen a different angle the bluebells nodding in the gentle breeze doesn’t really come across very well. Nevermind, a good excuse to try again.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Lily of the Valley<\/p>\n

Great to see plenty of the wild relative of one of our more frequently grown garden plants continuing to thrive at Gait Barrows.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Early Purple Orchid – looking like being a good year for Orchids.<\/p>\n

Sad to see the old boardwalk being removed as part of the restoration works. Although it\u2019s being replaced by another one set further back from the lake the new one appears to be considerably higher off the ground. Probably better for bird watchers hoping to see the Bitterns however I\u2019m unsure the Common Lizards will be prepared to climb so high to bask in the warmth of the late afternoon sunshine. Perhaps once the vegetation has recovered and begun to encroach it\u2019ll be a bit more lizard friendly.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
