Swans & Hobbys

Hmmm… not sure if that looks right however hobbies they’re definitely not.

A few highlights from a really enjoyable week on the Somerset Levels. First stop Westhay Moor a 5 minute drive from where we’d set up camp just outside Wedmore.

Great to see the young cygnets whilst they were still on their nest. The day after they were swimming around closely guarded by their parents

Unbelievably small this group of cygnets appeared to be a couple of days ahead of the ones still on their nest. Interesting to see the sudden burst of speed they could produce whilst enjoying a guided tour of their new home.

One of up to 15 Hobby’s hunting high over Westhay. Despite the sunshine unfortunately the northerly wind resulted in the day being relatively cool. With the noticeable lack of dragonflies the Hobbys rarely dropped down close enough for a photograph.

Other notable sightings included 2 Bitterns, an Otter, a Roebuck, 3 Cuckoo’s, 2 Cetti’s Warblers and dozens of Reed Warblers. A fantastic reserve and relatively quiet
