Waxwings

Coming to a car park near you!

It appears that up in northern Finland and Russia 2012 was a good breeding season for the Bohemian Waxwing. Unfortunately their normal winter diet of Rowan berries failed leading to the Waxwings arriving in the UK.

Thankfully over the past 30 years Rowans have been widely planted in many of our out of town shopping centres and industrial parks.

Waxwing complete with distinctive red tips to secondaries
The common name refers to the bright red sealing wax like tips of the secondary feathers.

Bohemian is thought to be a reference to the Romany Gypsy and a comparison to the bird’s wanderings across Europe.
