Horner Wood

A few photo’s from a trip up to Horner Wood.

Following a morning of torrential downpours we didn’t have particularly high hopes as we headed inland and up into the wilds of Holnicote Estate. The first problem was getting there. As we rounded a corner a swollen stream crossed the narrow road. A car parked on the opposite side suggested that even the locals had decided it just wasn’t worth the risk. I could probably reverse, put my foot down and we might be alright. Instead we reversed carried out a 7 point turn and headed back up the road to a parking area.

After cutting through an area of Oak woodland we headed up into the moors on the trail of a Cuckoo. Close to the top we enjoyed some wonderful views as the Cuckoo dropped in on the Meadow Pipits. Also plenty of Stonechats and a brief view of a Pied Flycatcher.

Plenty of Bilberries to be found. I suspect its a really popular area in July.

Superb walking country.

Plenty of Reindeer Moss.

Unfortunately shortly after the heavens opened and what was a really enjoyable walk became a sprint back to the car.
